IT Band Syndrome (Iliotibial Band Syndrome)
IT Band Syndrome happens when the iliotibial (IT) band—a thick band of tissue running along the outside of the thigh—becomes tight or irritated, causing pain on the outside of the knee. The pain often gets worse with running, walking downhill, or climbing stairs.
IT Band Syndrome (Iliotibial Band Syndrome)
Causes and Risk Factors:
- Overuse from running, cycling, or repetitive leg movements
- Tight hip or thigh muscles, which pull on the IT band
- Weak hip or glute muscles, leading to a poor leg alignment
- Sudden increase in training or activity
- Poor footwear or improper running technique
- Leg length differences or flat feet
What Happens If Left Untreated?
If not treated, IT Band Syndrome can cause ongoing pain, knee instability, and difficulty with running, walking, or climbing stairs, possibly leading to longer recovery times or compensation injuries.
How Premier Care Can Help:
- Manual Therapy: Hands-on techniques to loosen tight muscles and relieve pressure on the IT band
- Therapeutic Exercises: Stretching and strengthening to balance muscles and improve movement patterns
- Pain Relief Treatments: Ice, heat, or electrical stimulation to calm irritation and reduce inflammation
- Gait and Movement Training: Teaching proper form to reduce stress on the knee and hip
- Personalized Recovery Plan: A step-by-step program to help you return to your normal activities safely
