Knee Bursitis

Knee bursitis happens when the bursa—a small fluid-filled sac near the knee joint—becomes swollen or irritated, causing pain, swelling, and tenderness. It may hurt to kneel, bend the knee, or touch the area around the kneecap.

Causes and Risk Factors:

  • Frequent kneeling, especially on hard surfaces (common in jobs like plumbing or gardening)
  • Direct blows or falls to the knee
  • Repetitive knee movement or pressure
  • Infections, especially if there’s a cut near the knee
  • Arthritis or other joint conditions
  • Previous knee injuries

What Happens If Left Untreated?

If not treated, knee bursitis can cause persistent pain, swelling, and limited movement, and in some cases, the bursa can become infected and require medical treatment.
