Meniscus Tear

A meniscus tear is an injury to the rubbery cartilage in the knee that helps cushion and stabilize the joint. It often happens during twisting or turning movements, especially when the foot is planted. It can cause pain, swelling, stiffness, or a catching/locking feeling in the knee.

Causes and Risk Factors:

  • Sudden twisting or turning, especially during sports
  • Squatting or lifting heavy objects
  • Aging and wear-and-tear, which can weaken the cartilage
  • Repetitive knee movements or overuse
  • Previous knee injuries
  • Weak leg muscles or poor joint stability

What Happens If Left Untreated?

If not treated, a meniscus tear can lead to chronic knee pain, swelling, reduced mobility, and further joint damage, possibly increasing the risk of arthritis.
