Scoliosis

A condition where the spine curves abnormally, often forming a “C” or “S” shape. While mild cases may go unnoticed, more severe scoliosis can lead to pain, posture imbalances, and mobility challenges. It can develop during childhood, adolescence, or adulthood due to various factors.

Causes & Risk Factors

While the exact cause of scoliosis isn't always clear, common risk factors include:

  • Idiopathic Scoliosis: The most common type, often diagnosed in adolescents with no identifiable cause.
  • Congenital Scoliosis: Present at birth due to irregularities in spinal development.
  • Neuromuscular Scoliosis: Resulting from conditions like cerebral palsy or muscular dystrophy.
  • Degenerative Scoliosis: Occurs later in life due to spinal wear, arthritis, or osteoporosis.

What Happens If Left Untreated?

Without intervention, scoliosis can progress, leading to chronic pain, postural dysfunction, and reduced mobility. Severe cases may impact lung function due to rib cage compression. Early detection and appropriate treatment can help prevent complications.
