Elbow Bursitis (Olecranon Bursitis)

Elbow bursitis is when the bursa—a small, fluid-filled sac at the tip of the elbow—becomes swollen or irritated. This can cause pain, swelling, and a soft bump on the back of the elbow, making it hard to lean on or move your arm comfortably.

Causes and Risk Factors:

  • Leaning on the elbow for long periods, like at a desk or table
  • Falls or hits to the elbow, causing irritation or injury
  • Repetitive elbow movement or pressure
  • Infections, especially if there’s a cut near the elbow
  • Medical conditions, like gout or arthritis, which can lead to inflammation

What Happens If Left Untreated?

Untreated elbow bursitis can lead to increased swelling, ongoing pain, limited movement, and possible infection, which may require more serious treatment.
