Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) Injury

An ACL injury is when the anterior cruciate ligament—one of the main ligaments that helps stabilize the knee—gets stretched, torn, or completely ruptured. This often causes a “popping” sound, swelling, pain, and knee instability, especially during sports or sudden movements.

Causes and Risk Factors:

  • Sudden stops, twists, or changes in direction, common in sports like soccer, basketball, or football
  • Landing awkwardly from a jump
  • Direct hit to the knee, such as during a fall or collision
  • Weak hip or leg muscles, which increase stress on the knee
  • Poor movement mechanics or posture during activity
  • Previous ACL injuries, which raise the risk of re-injury

What Happens If Left Untreated?

If not treated, an ACL injury can lead to ongoing knee instability, more damage to other parts of the knee (like cartilage or meniscus), and long-term joint problems like arthritis.
