Whiplash

Whiplash is a neck injury caused by a sudden, forceful movement that rapidly shifts the head forward and backward, leading to strain or damage in the cervical spine's soft tissues.

Causes and Risk Factors

Whiplash injuries occur when the head experiences sudden acceleration and deceleration forces, often due to:

  • Rear-end car collisions, which are the most common cause
  • Contact sports, such as football or boxing
  • Falls or direct blows to the head or neck
  • Roller coasters or other high-speed amusement rides
  • Physical assaults, where the head is forcibly pushed or shaken

Individuals with previous neck injuries or weaker cervical muscles may be more susceptible to severe whiplash effects.

What Happens If Left Untreated?

While some mild cases of whiplash resolve with time, untreated or severe injuries can lead to long-term complications, including:

  • Chronic neck pain and stiffness
  • Persistent headaches and migraines
  • Weakness or instability in the cervical spine
  • Muscle imbalances leading to posture issues
  • Development of more serious spinal conditions

Early intervention helps prevent long-term discomfort and improves recovery outcomes.
